Music

Music at Rainhill High School inspires pupils to develop their creativity, confidence and musicianship through performing, composing and listening. Pupils explore a wide variety of musical styles, cultures and traditions while developing the practical, theoretical and analytical skills needed to become confident musicians.

Throughout Key Stage 3, pupils learn to perform using voice, keyboards, percussion and music technology. They develop an understanding of rhythm, melody, harmony and notation while exploring music from different historical periods and around the world. Pupils are encouraged to compose their own music, work collaboratively and evaluate their performances using specialist musical vocabulary.

At Key Stage 4, pupils follow the BTEC Tech Award in Music Practice, where they develop practical performance skills, composition techniques and an understanding of the music industry. The course encourages independence, creativity and collaboration while preparing pupils for further study and careers within the creative industries.

Year 7

Term 1 – Musical Foundations

Pupils begin by developing the fundamental elements of music, including pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and structure. They learn keyboard technique, basic notation and ensemble performance skills while building confidence in practical music-making.

Term 2 – World Music

Pupils explore music from different cultures and traditions, investigating how rhythm, melody and instruments vary around the world. Practical performance activities encourage pupils to develop listening skills, ensemble awareness and an appreciation of musical diversity.

Term 3 – Composition and Performance

Pupils begin composing their own short musical pieces using the musical elements studied throughout the year. They refine keyboard and ensemble skills while learning how composers organise ideas using repetition, contrast and structure.

Year 8

Term 1 – Popular Music

Pupils investigate the development of popular music, exploring different genres, instruments and performance styles. They perform well-known repertoire while analysing the musical features that define each style.

Term 2 – Film and Media Music

Pupils explore how music is used to create atmosphere, emotion and character within film and television. They analyse famous film themes before composing music to accompany visual media using traditional instruments and music technology.

Term 3 – Songwriting and Music Technology

Pupils develop their own songwriting skills by creating melodies, chord sequences and lyrics. They learn how music technology can be used to record, edit and produce original music, working both independently and collaboratively.

Year 10

Component 1 – Exploring Music Products and Styles

Pupils investigate a wide range of musical styles and professional music products. They analyse how musicians create performances for different audiences and purposes while developing their understanding of the music industry. Practical work includes performing, listening and evaluating examples of professional music.

Component 2 – Music Skills Development

Pupils build practical skills in performance, composition and music technology. They rehearse individually and as part of an ensemble, refining technical accuracy, interpretation and confidence. Pupils also develop planning, rehearsal and evaluation skills while preparing work for assessment.

Year 11

Terms 1 & 2 – Responding to a Brief Through Drama (Component 3)

Pupils respond to an externally set brief by creating a performance or design concept for a specific audience and purpose. They explore ideas from a stimulus, select appropriate acting styles and techniques, and rehearse collaboratively. Pupils perform or present their work and evaluate how effectively it communicates intentions and meets the brief.

This unit is externally assessed and includes both practical performance and written evaluation.

By the End of the Course

By the end of Year 11, pupils will be confident performers who understand how drama is created, rehearsed and performed. They will be able to analyse theatre work, apply acting techniques effectively and evaluate performance with insight. Pupils are well prepared for further study in Drama, Performing Arts or related subjects, and for using communication and teamwork skills in a wide range of future pathways.
