EMOTIONAL HEALTH & WELLBEING

Supporting Pupils to Learn and Thrive

At Rainhill High School, we recognise that a pupil's emotional health and wellbeing can affect their attendance, relationships, engagement and learning.

Our approach is therefore focused on identifying difficulties early, removing barriers to learning and reducing disruption to a pupil's education.

Through positive relationships, clear routines and high expectations, we aim to create an environment in which pupils feel safe, supported and ready to learn. Where additional help is needed, we work with pupils and families to provide support that enables them to remain engaged with school and make progress.

This reflects our values of Learn, Think, Contribute and Care and our ambition of In Pursuit of Excellence.

Our Approach to Support

Most pupils' wellbeing is supported through the everyday experience of school: positive relationships, high-quality teaching, predictable routines, the Character Curriculum, Professional Standards and strong pastoral care.

Where a pupil experiences additional barriers, support is matched to their needs.

01

Universal

For all pupils

Positive relationships • high-quality teaching • Character Curriculum • tutor and pastoral support • safe and predictable routines

02

Targeted

Additional support when needed

Pastoral support • mentoring • ELSA • counselling where appropriate • attendance support • SEND and inclusion support

03

Bespoke

Individual or specialist support

Individualised plans • internal provision where appropriate • external professionals • health and specialist services • multi-agency support

Universal → Targeted → Bespoke

The purpose is consistent: to remove barriers, minimise interruption to education and help pupils participate successfully in school.

When Additional Help Is Needed

Sometimes a pupil may need more than the support routinely available in school.

Our pastoral, SEND, attendance and safeguarding teams work together to understand what may be affecting the pupil's education and determine the appropriate response.

Understand the Barrier

We consider what may be affecting attendance, learning, relationships, behaviour or wellbeing.

Coordinate Support

Relevant school teams work together so that support is joined up rather than fragmented.

Involve Specialists

Where necessary, we work with families and external professionals to secure additional or specialist support.

Keep Pupils Connected

Wherever possible, support is designed to maintain engagement with learning and the wider school community.

Trauma-Informed Practice

We recognise that children's experiences, including trauma and adversity, can influence their behaviour, relationships and readiness to learn.

Our trauma-informed approach helps staff understand these barriers and make appropriate adaptations while maintaining high expectations for pupils.

Our aim wherever possible is to keep pupils connected to learning and their school community, and to support a successful return to full participation where their education has been interrupted.

KNOWLEDGE & RESILIENCE

Helping Pupils Understand Their Wellbeing

Support is only one part of our approach. We also teach pupils the knowledge and skills they need to understand and manage their own wellbeing.

Learning About Wellbeing

Through statutory Health Education, PSHE/RSHE, the Character Curriculum, tutor time, assemblies and the wider curriculum, pupils learn about:

  • emotional wellbeing;
  • healthy relationships;
  • resilience and managing challenges;
  • online influences; and
  • where to seek help.
As pupils grow older, we encourage increasing independence, self-awareness and confidence in managing challenges and seeking appropriate support.
WORKING TOGETHER

Working with Parents & Carers

Parents and carers are important partners in this work.

We encourage you to contact us early if something is affecting your child's wellbeing, attendance or ability to learn.

Early communication often allows relatively small difficulties to be addressed before they become greater barriers.

School + Home + Pupil

Together, we can identify what is getting in the way and agree the support that will help your child attend, engage and succeed.
