ART, DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
Developing creativity, practical expertise and purposeful design through Art, Food & Nutrition, Product Design and Textiles.
Art, Design & Technology at Rainhill
From ideas to purposeful outcomes
Art, Design & Technology brings together creative thinking, practical skill, technical knowledge and critical evaluation. Pupils learn to investigate ideas, understand materials and processes, respond to users and contexts and refine their work with increasing independence.
Key Stage 3 Subject
Art
Art enables pupils to understand how people have represented ideas, beliefs and experiences across time and cultures. Through practical exploration, pupils develop observational skill, visual literacy and increasingly purposeful choices about materials, techniques and visual communication.
Foundations of Art & Design
Pupils explore the history of art, line and pattern through Street Art and Keith Haring, then colour theory and portraiture through Cubism and Pablo Picasso. Drawing, printmaking, composition and visual vocabulary are established.
Exploration and refinement
Art-history case studies lead into Still Life and the Human Figure. Pupils develop observational drawing, painting, sculpture, contextual research and an increasing ability to compare artists, evaluate decisions and refine outcomes.
Independent creative decisions
Pupils investigate Pop Art, popular culture, mass media, religious art, symbolism and freedom of expression. Painting, collage, printmaking, digital processes and contextual analysis support more personal and independently refined outcomes.
How learning builds over time
Pupils move from contextual knowledge, observational drawing, colour and printmaking towards increasingly sophisticated analysis, experimentation and refinement. By Year 9, traditional and digital processes are used with greater independence and creative intention.
Key Stage 3 Subject
Food & Nutrition
Food & Nutrition gives pupils the knowledge and practical skills needed to make safe, healthy and informed choices. Pupils develop confidence in cooking while learning about nutrition, ingredients, food provenance, sustainability and the science behind food preparation.
Safe and confident cooking
Pupils establish food hygiene and cooker safety before developing preparation and cooking skills. The Eatwell Guide, food groups, ingredient functions, provenance and sensory evaluation introduce informed food choice.
Nutrition and food science
Practical work becomes more demanding as pupils explore macronutrients, micronutrients and energy balance. Dietary needs, sauces, gelatinisation and recipe adaptation connect scientific understanding with practical outcomes.
Increasing independence
Pupils develop advanced cooking skills and investigate bread, pastry, ingredient functions and global food cultures. They plan, adapt, present and critically evaluate increasingly sophisticated dishes.
How learning builds over time
The curriculum progresses from safe routines and core preparation skills to informed recipe adaptation and increasingly complex food science. By Year 9, pupils combine nutritional understanding, technical accuracy and evaluation to work with greater independence.
Key Stage 3 Subject
Product Design
Product Design teaches pupils to solve practical problems through research, creativity, technical knowledge and evaluation. Materials, mechanisms, electronics and manufacturing processes are combined to create purposeful products for real users.
USB Lamp
Pupils learn the design process through a practical USB lamp project. Timber, polymers, electronic components, simple circuits, safe manufacture, sustainability, testing and evaluation establish core workshop knowledge.
Mobile Phone Holder
User-centred design is developed through influences including Bauhaus and Memphis. Pupils work with acrylic and laser ply and develop CAD/CAM, laser cutting, structural understanding and awareness of production methods.
Pewter Casting
Pupils work with more demanding materials and processes through Art Deco, metals, mould making and pewter casting. Quality control, tolerance, finishing and refinement require increasingly independent technical decisions.
How learning builds over time
Pupils begin with a structured design process and safe workshop practice, progress through user-centred thinking and digital manufacture, then apply more demanding materials and processes while making increasingly independent decisions about function, aesthetics and quality.
Key Stage 3 Subject
Textiles
Textiles combines creative design with precise practical skill. Pupils learn how fabrics, construction methods, decoration and emerging technologies can be used to create products that respond to a user, purpose and design context.
Core textile techniques
Pupils develop safe working and accurate hand-sewing through running stitch, back stitch and cross stitch. Embroidery, appliqué, buttons, fabric knowledge and designing for a user introduce the relationship between technique and purpose.
Designer influence
Pupils analyse designer products and develop construction and decorative skills. Fabric properties, intended use, sustainability and designer influence inform increasingly considered practical outcomes.
Advanced techniques
Layering, decorative stitching, texture, pattern and colour are combined with emerging technologies. Pupils make increasingly independent design choices and refine the quality of manufactured outcomes through evaluation.
How learning builds over time
Pupils establish accurate hand-sewing and safe working habits before exploring designer influence, materials and construction in greater depth. They progress towards combining techniques with increasing control, originality and independence.
Key Stage 4 · Years 10–11
Creative, technical and practical pathways
At Key Stage 4, pupils can develop greater specialism through a range of creative, design, technical and food-based courses. Learning becomes increasingly independent, with pupils expected to research, plan, experiment, manufacture or create, evaluate and refine their work.
Fine Art
Research, drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking and three-dimensional processes lead from guided skills work towards an independent portfolio and externally set response.
Photography
Camera control, composition, lighting, DSLR techniques, editing and contextual research develop towards increasingly personal and independently planned photographic work.
Graphic Communication
Pupils interpret briefs and audiences while developing typography, imagery, layout, colour, composition and digital design through increasingly sophisticated visual communication.
3D Design
Form, structure, materials and construction are explored through research, drawing, modelling and prototyping. Pupils refine ideas from initial concept towards resolved physical outcomes.
Textiles
Surface, structure, construction, pattern and materials are explored through designer research, sampling and refinement, culminating in increasingly personal portfolio outcomes.
Food Preparation & Nutrition
Practical competence is combined with nutrition, food science, safety and informed food choice. Pupils increasingly explain, adapt, plan and evaluate practical outcomes independently.
Construction
Materials, tools, techniques, measurement, health and safety and professional working practices develop through practical and technical learning linked to the built environment.
Across the faculty
Knowledge, communication and practical application
Although each discipline is distinct, pupils repeatedly apply research, technical vocabulary, numeracy, discussion, practical skill and evaluation to make increasingly informed decisions.
Reading & research
Pupils interpret artists and designers, briefs, specifications, recipes, methods, technical guidance, contextual sources and information about materials and processes.
Oracy & evaluation
Pupils present ideas, explain choices, discuss influences and respond constructively to feedback using accurate specialist terminology.
Numeracy
Measurement, proportion, scale, dimensions, time, temperature, costing, ratios, pattern and graphical information are applied authentically across the faculty.
Independence
Pupils progress from modelled techniques and structured tasks towards purposeful experimentation, informed decision-making, refinement and increasingly independent outcomes.
