CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

PHASE 3 · YEARS 10 & 11

Competitive Edge

Achievement, responsibility and readiness for the future.

Phase 3 brings together the knowledge, learning habits and character pupils have developed throughout their Rainhill journey.

The Character Curriculum progresses from Responsibility & Professionalism in Year 10 to Resilience & Readiness in Year 11.

WHY COMPETITIVE EDGE?

Ambitious Qualifications. Strong Character. Successful Progression.

We call the phase Competitive Edge because it combines ambitious qualifications with the knowledge, independence, character and experiences pupils need for successful progression beyond Year 11.

CURRICULUM ENTITLEMENT

An Ambitious Key Stage 4 Curriculum

All pupils follow a substantial academic core.

9
English curriculum periods
9
Mathematics curriculum periods
9
Science curriculum periods
2
Core PE curriculum periods

Alongside this core, pupils continue citizenship through the Character Curriculum and study their pathway and option subjects.

Pupils follow different combinations through our Key Stage 4 routes, providing access to a broad range of academic, creative, technical and vocational qualifications.

Curriculum routes are designed to respond to pupils' strengths, interests, needs and aspirations while maintaining ambitious expectations and keeping future opportunities open.

INCLUSION WITH AMBITION

Adaptation Without Unnecessary Exclusion

Our approach to Key Stage 4 routes is grounded in the principle that difference in provision should not mean reduced ambition or unnecessary exclusion from the curriculum.

Where pupils require adaptation, leaders consider what support or adjustment will enable them to continue accessing as much of the mainstream curriculum as possible.

Within lessons, Systems of Learning and Teacher Transitions provide consistent mechanisms through which teachers adapt teaching, respond to pupils' needs and support successful participation in learning while maintaining ambitious expectations.

For a small number of pupils, the Gold/Nurture pathway provides a more adapted programme. Pupils continue to study English, mathematics, science, physical education and citizenship alongside selected options and Preparation for Life.

The purpose of this pathway is not to remove pupils from an ambitious education. It is to provide a coherently adapted programme that responds to identified barriers, supports progress and preserves access to meaningful qualifications and future progression.

THE PRINCIPLE

Adapt what needs to be adapted. Maintain ambition.

Adaptations are considered in terms of their longer-term impact: whether they increase pupils' ability to participate, learn independently and move successfully to their next stage.

BECOMING MORE INDEPENDENT

Learning, Assessment & Challenge

INCREASING INDEPENDENCE

Preparing for External Qualifications

Homework, purposeful practice, retrieval and revision become increasingly important through Years 10 and 11.

Teachers explicitly support pupils in developing the organisation and study habits required for external qualifications rather than assuming these skills are already secure.

ASSESSMENT & RESPONSE

Support and Challenge

LP1, LP2 and LP3, internal examinations and ongoing classroom assessment provide evidence of what pupils know and where further teaching, support or challenge is needed.

Intervention is targeted according to identified need, but does not replace high-quality classroom teaching or pupils' entitlement to their curriculum.

CHARACTER CURRICULUM

Competitive Edge

Readiness for future success extends beyond examination outcomes.

YEAR 10

Responsibility & Professionalism

Year 10 focuses increasingly on responsibility, professionalism, relationships, ethics, digital life, ambition and careers.

YEAR 11

Resilience & Readiness

Year 11 develops towards resilience, readiness, communication, academic integrity, financial literacy, future pathways and successful transition.

NEXT STEPS

Careers & Destinations

Careers provision becomes increasingly personalised.

01

Explore

Pupils explore RH6, colleges, apprenticeships, training, higher education pathways and employment.

02

Experience

Encounters with employers and providers, visiting speakers and individual careers guidance help pupils understand different pathways.

03

Decide

Pupils are supported to understand entry requirements and make informed decisions about their next stage.

BEYOND QUALIFICATIONS

Leadership & Wider Opportunity

LEADERSHIP

Increasing Responsibility

Year 10 leadership can include Student Parliament, the Events Team, supporting transition, leading extra-curricular activities, Eco Committee participation, Media Team, Sports Leadership and prefect applications.

In Year 11, leadership can extend to Head Student, Deputy Head Student and senior prefect roles, chairing Student Parliament, House leadership, Eco Committee leadership and media/editorial responsibility.

The progression is deliberate: pupils move from participating and representing towards taking increasing responsibility for others and for aspects of school life.

WIDER OPPORTUNITY

Experiences Still Matter

Sport, performing arts, enrichment, community involvement, House activity and extra-curricular opportunities remain available throughout Key Stage 4.

Academic pressure should not result in pupils unnecessarily losing access to the wider experiences that contribute to confidence, belonging, leadership and personal development.

RECOGNITION & CULTURE

Recognition and Celebration

House Points

House Points remain the everyday currency for affirming the actions, attitudes and achievements we want to see.

Club 100

Daily House Points accumulate towards Club 100 recognition, connecting pupils' everyday positive choices, commitment and contribution with wider school rewards.

Lions

Lions recognise the exceptional.

Growing Responsibility

As pupils mature, recognition increasingly captures sustained academic commitment, leadership, representation and contribution alongside achievement.

KNOWN. SUPPORTED. CHALLENGED.

Ambition Remains Personal

Pupils remain known as individuals throughout Key Stage 4.

Teachers, tutors, year teams and inclusion staff work together to identify barriers, adapt provision and evaluate whether support is helping pupils become increasingly successful and independent.

Remove the barrier where possible. Maintain ambition. Keep pupils connected to the widest appropriate curriculum and to their peers.

BY THE END OF PHASE 3

Ready for What Comes Next

Competitive Edge is designed to ensure pupils leave Rainhill having experienced an ambitious curriculum and progressively greater expectations for independence, responsibility and decision-making.

We want pupils to leave with strong qualifications, secure knowledge, confidence in their next steps and the character and independence needed to take advantage of future opportunities.
