PHYSICAL EDUCATION & SPORT
Physical Education develops confident, knowledgeable and physically active young people. Through practical performance, competition, fitness, leadership and analysis, pupils learn how to improve their own performance, work effectively with others and understand the contribution physical activity makes to lifelong health and wellbeing.
Performance, health and lifelong participation
The curriculum develops physical competence alongside tactical understanding, fitness knowledge, leadership and the ability to analyse performance. Pupils experience team, individual, dance, athletics and outdoor activities while learning how practice, training, decision-making and healthy choices contribute to improvement.
Pupils learn to perform, compete, lead, officiate and evaluate. As they progress, they make increasingly independent decisions about tactics, training and improvement while developing resilience, teamwork and respect.
Physical Education
Physical Education develops competence, confidence and a lasting commitment to physical activity. Pupils improve performance across team, individual, dance and outdoor activities while learning about tactics, fitness, health, leadership, resilience and respectful competition.
Coaching, teaching, physiotherapy, sport psychology, nutrition, personal training, officiating, rehabilitation, sports development and performance analysis.
Core skills and participation
Pupils establish core techniques, rules and simple tactics across team and individual activities. Fitness, effective warm-ups, dance, outdoor activity and athletics broaden their experience while pupils learn to cooperate, communicate, sustain activity and begin analysing performance.
Competition and performance
Pupils apply more advanced skills under competitive pressure and adapt tactics to changing situations. Fitness, health and nutrition become more prominent alongside leadership, navigation, dance, athletics and increasingly detailed analysis of strengths and areas for improvement.
Strategy, training and leadership
Pupils develop higher-level performance, strategy and decision-making while studying training methods including continuous, interval, fartlek, circuit, HIIT and weight training. They design training, lead or officiate others and increasingly analyse and refine performance independently.
Pupils progress from performing core skills and applying simple tactics to adapting advanced skills in competitive situations. They become increasingly able to analyse performance, plan improvements, lead others and understand how training and lifestyle choices support long-term health and participation.
PE & Sport at Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4, pupils can extend their learning through two distinct pathways. GCSE Physical Education connects scientific and theoretical understanding directly to practical performance, while Cambridge National in Sport Studies develops applied knowledge through realistic sporting and vocational contexts.
Physical Education
Pupils study the musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems, movement analysis, physical training, fitness testing and the effects of exercise. Later learning develops sports psychology, participation, socio-cultural influences, health, wellbeing and nutrition, with knowledge continually applied to performers and practical sporting examples.
Sport Science
Pupils develop applied knowledge of safe participation, sports injuries, medical conditions, fitness and training. They conduct fitness testing, analyse strengths and weaknesses, design training programmes and examine nutrition and sports performance through realistic scenarios and vocational assessment tasks.
Both pathways build upon the practical, tactical, fitness and analytical knowledge developed at Key Stage 3. Pupils increasingly interpret evidence, explain cause and effect, analyse performance and make justified recommendations about training, participation, safety and improvement.
Performance, analysis and leadership
PE and Sport combines physical performance with communication, quantitative evidence and informed decision-making. Pupils are expected not only to perform, but to understand why performance succeeds and how it can be improved.
Practical performance
Pupils develop accuracy, control, fluency and tactical awareness through demonstration, repeated practice, conditioned activities and competition. Increasing challenge requires skills to be selected and adapted rather than simply reproduced.
Leadership & communication
Pupils communicate within teams, use coaching points, lead warm-ups and activities, officiate and give constructive performance feedback. Clear instruction and active listening become increasingly important as responsibility grows.
Numeracy & performance data
Time, distance, scores, averages, percentages, training intensity and fitness measures are used to understand performance. At Key Stage 4, pupils interpret increasingly detailed graphs, tables, test results and sporting data.
Analysis & improvement
Pupils learn to identify strengths and weaknesses, explain tactical and training decisions and use evidence and feedback to improve. By Year 9 and beyond, analysis becomes increasingly independent and precise.
Sport at Rainhill Sixth
Sport continues at Rainhill Sixth through a Level 3 pathway combining knowledge of the sports sector with applied understanding of performance, training and professional practice. Students examine anatomy and physiology, fitness and training principles, sports development and the organisation of sport while developing analysis, planning, communication and evaluation through realistic sporting contexts.
